Bedroom & Study
[Taken from the original 'The Alice Project' bus conversion and motorhome website 2002-2003]
Once the painting was completed, the serious business of furniture building began in the bedroom and study area. We decided to build everything ourselves (a 'fun' learning experience). In the bedroom, we built a queen sized double bed frame and used the slats off our existing bed. We plan to use the space under the bed for storage, so having slats will give us another access option. Unlike many conversions we have seen, we did not wish to have overhead cupboards hanging just above our heads in the bed, so have built only bedside tables near the head of the bed.
At the foot of the bed are located two large cupboards (for clothes). These two cupboards face towards the bed, with a gap in the middle for the aisle. There are no doors on these cupboards (not practical or needed!) but we can close these off with fabric on ’stretchy wire’. Beyond the cupboards is the study area, complete with desk and shelving for books above. The desk is home to our desktop computer, printer and other equipment. On the other side of the bus to the desk is the ‘dressing table’ with cupboard space, toiletry shelving and mirror cabinet.
We finished the bedroom and study area off with curtain pelmets and pine skirting around the windows. In total, the bedroom took about three months to complete. Towards the end of the project, we also completely carpeted the bedroom and study area - a time consuming job to measure and cut but well worth the effort. Considering our complete lack of carpentry skills and knowledge prior to starting, we are quite amazed with the end creation! It is both functional and comfortable…. and we love it!
